![]() The fictional author in the “Author’s preface” is presumably Yan Lianke himself, a novelist commissioned to write and edit the chronicles of Explosion (炸裂), a fictional city and an epitome of the Chinese urban expansions in the past 40 years. Yan Lianke’s The Explosion Chronicles (炸裂志, 2013) begins its narrative with a direct address to the readership. By assuming the narrative voice of a novelist commissioned to write a historical account for a fast-developing metropolis, Yan Lianke undertakes the task of revealing the constant historical truth underlying the changing realities, embodying an understanding of the historical progress similar to Walter Benjamin’s visualization of an angel facing the accumulating wreckages of the past. The Explosion Chronicles can be read as a development mythology that is framed by important mythological themes from ancient Chinese mythological discourses, not only blurring the distinctions between the rational and the mythical, but also adopting a whole different logic of progress. This article argues that by constantly challenging the authority of truth, Yan Lianke showcases in this novel a new way of grasping reality that is different from the magical realism’s approach. It is an experiment contrived according to his own theory of mythorealism-a literary attempt to grasp reality that is not in existence, out of sight, and concealed by other superficial realities. Yan Lianke’s fictional historiography, The Explosion Chronicles, probes into the stories behind the economic miracles with an eye especially for the aspects that are against the common logic of reality. “Miraculous” is a word often used to describe the rapid development of urbanization that have taken place in China in the past 30 years. ![]() ![]() The Samsung TV should then respond when you press any of the buttons on the remote. It’s a perfectly maddening note to end on. The episode draws to a close as Holden grasps a piece of murder cloud in his fingertips-and it moves, sharpens, responding the Holden’s touch. So here we have what looks to be our Big Bad for the season: a mysterious murder cloud that takes out 23 scientists. The force penetrates the ship’s surface like gunfire, but it becomes clear by the end of the episode that this is an organic substance-one that attacks the settlement in a cloud-like formation after Holden and his crew land and get unfriendly with the locals. Mid-flight, their ship is all but destroyed by a force we can’t identify. Aboard that ship, along with scientists eager to explore the surface, is security chief Adolphus Murtry (Burn Gorman, whose familiar face immediately clues us into the fact that he’s going to be around for a bit). Meanwhile, Royal Charter Energy sends a ship to Ilus before the Roci’s arrival. I wasn’t quite sold on the relationship between the two of them when it first began, but over a couple seasons, I’ve come to appreciate it, mainly because of Steven Strait and Dominique Tipper’s chemistry. Holden has his worries, but Naomi assures him that whatever they encounter, they’ll do it together. When it’s time to prep for the mission, Naomi informs the rest of the crew that she’ll be joining them on the surface of Ilus. (Plus, Drummer has an extremely cool spinal implant now!) After all, it is The Expanse.) We don’t learn a ton through any of these scenes, but it’s good to know everyone is present and accounted for, if nothing else. (That last one comes later in the episode. I expect we’ll be seeing a lot more of these with the show’s new budget, which is considerably larger, judging from the scope of the CGI and sets on display here. It’s worth noting that the Belters are met with resistance from government forces upon their initial entry into the Ring, and that resistance leads to the episode’s first big, beautiful space battle. We’ll later learn they’re making their way to a new planet beyond the Ring, where, over eight months, they colonize, forming the kind of shantytown that calls to mind District 9 and, appropriately, USA’s Colony (RIP). We begin, as ever, in media res with a Belter ship. And, having seen the season four premiere at New York Comic Con two months ahead of the season’s release on December 13, I’m genuinely thrilled to report the excitement is more than warranted. Naturally, there’s a ton of excitement surrounding the show’s return to TV. Ramsay particularly enjoys making his litigants angry with each other, which on a few occasions resulted in physical confrontations, including arguments, and then, brawls which can eventually be broken up by bailiffs. The program followed a half hour format and was unusual among courtroom shows for its crudeness and lack of courtroom decorum: When the chief bailiff, Big Show, instructs the audience to rise for the Judge Gordon Ramsay's entrance, the audience (all made up of college students) rose all awhile cheering and chanting repeatedly. As noted, the revived show of Eye for an Eye takes a darker tone and deals with more serious topics than the usually covered, most involving criminal justice issues of its predecessor of the same name. This, however, was only one of many reasons as to why the highly unconventional series was considered a nontraditional court show, the program having adopted many maneuvers that were atypical to the traditional present court shows. 'Eye for an Eye' is a syndicated show, and being that it was a pseudo-court show in an era in which most court programming used an arbitration-based reality format, Eye for an Eye was a nontraditional series within the judicial genre. One of the common themes in laundromat etiquette, you'll notice, is to be considerate of others: their time, their space, their belongings. And of course, nights and weekends are going to be the busiest in any laundromat, so be courteous to all the other people who also need to wash their clothes, and don't hog the machines. If it's a small facility with just a few machines, such as the ones apartment buildings sometimes offer, it's definitely not cool to use all the machines to accelerate your laundry chores. Other potentially harmful bacteria include Staphylococcus (which may cause mild to severe skin infections as well as life-threatening conditions such as sepsis) and klebsiella (which, among other serious conditions, causes pneumonia and urinary tract infections). That translates into about 100 million E.coli released into the soapy water as the clothes are cleaned and rinsed (and that's not taking into account the other fecal-friendly microorganisms such as hepatitis A virus), bacteria that will wait around to hitch a ride on your clothes - and then onto your hands. Let's imagine the person using the washing machine before you does a load of underwear: Each pair of underwear in that load carries an average of one-tenth of a gram of fecal matter. Laundry is dirty before you wash it, but also after. Think twice about bringing your lunch to eat as you pass the time waiting for your clothes to wash and tumble the place is bugged - and, now, so are your hands.
